Ken, I admire and respect your resolute approach to dealing with the challenges facing you, your family and your friends.
I have not been as resolute as you in all this and I have been slow to document my own journey in a manner which could be comfortable to me and, at the same time, meaningful to others. On occasion, I posted some updates on Google Plus- where I came across your posts- but that didn’t seem to work for me.
I would be interested to learn more about your media environment and how we all could engage with other cancer patients for their own journeys.
Jefferson,
I’m very thankful for Google+. For me, Google Plus was the next step in a migration from Friendfeed (FF) with a handful of other FF refugees. I have been incredibly grateful for meeting you and several others on Google+.
Google has a habit of creating wonderful things, but failing to market them well and integrate them into their products and services. Google Wave was before it’s time, and still a superior collaboration tool to Slack. Google Reader was THE definitive RSS reader, and I have yet to find it’s equal even today. Microsoft made something similar with their Reading List app, which together with OneNote made for a fantastic bookmarking and annotation system.
So with many hosted tools being brought and torn down at the whim of their providers, I’m back to hosting my own domain and using a dedicated server to host all the services I want to use. The backend for https://tayledras.com is a beefy set of servers hosted on two Google Compute Nodes and two physical servers. I’m using git, ansible, Jenkins, PostgreSQL, WordPress, and MediaWiki to manage all of the content while Graylog, Grafana, and Google Analytics parses all of the system logs and website usage.
You’re welcome to have Developer accounts on my servers if you want to post content to https://tayledras.com or https://tayledras.com/wiki/ It looks like I’m getting 23 to 120 readers per day depending on how active I am. I’ve met several other “cancer combatants” and survivors through my efforts, and would dearly like to meet a few of them (including you).
Stay strong and stay in touch. I’m still here, and hoping to be far more active on here, Twitter, and Facebook in the post Google+ world.
Your friend,
– Ken
Thanks, Ken. Plenty of good technical advice in your post and I’ll take time to digest it all.
I travel to the District about once a month and maybe sometime in the future we could have lunch or something nearby to you.
All the best,
Jefferson
