Altruism, The Selfish Gene, Hubris, and Paying It Forward

Kevin Spacey
Kevin Spacey

I think that Kevin Spacey is a talented actor, an intelligent individual, and a “broken man.” I don’t agree with some of his actions and his treatment of others, but that doesn’t negate his talent or intelligence. I still respect both, even if I ache at how he treated others.

Watching Kevin Spacey in movies and reading his interviews, articles, and essays, the following quotes resounded with me:

β€œIt’s always the big question in our lives if you have a lot of success. What do you do with it? Buy more houses, buy more cars, buy more stuff, be wealthy and distant and unengaged? Or do you take all that good fortune that has come towards you and spread the love, do something with it?”

β€œI feel it’s a responsibility for anyone who breaks through a certain ceiling to send the elevator back down and give others a helpful lift.”

β€œWe’re all victims of our own hubris at times.”

AMERICAN BEAUTY and PAY IT FORWARD are two of his older movies, but I agree with and practice some of the sentiment he expressed in them. It is our duty and responsibility to help others and lift each other up.

For me, this means sharing my blessings and good fortune with others, in whatever forms that may take. As I use and upgrade toys and tech, I gift whatever I previously used and cared for to others. As I am blessed with good fortune, I try to share my time, talent, and resources with others.

β€œLet us try to teach generosity and altruism, because we are born selfish. Let us understand what our own selfish genes are up to, because we may then at least have the chance to upset their designs, something that no other species has ever aspired to do.”

― Richard Dawkins, The Selfish Gene

That credit goes to the writers and not to Kevin Spacey.
