Immersive Language Learning

Learning Japanese in Kindergarten

Immersive Language Learning would certainly be the fastest and best way to learn a new language and culture.

As much as I want to enroll in Immersive Language Learning to fully learn spoken and written Japanese from native Japanese speakers using daily lessons, conversations, writing, and reading, it’s $600 USD after 60% off.

If it were Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Google Compute Platform (GCP), my employer would readily agree and approve it. Given that I’d like to achieve Japanese fluency just for my own interesting, I’d likely have to do this out-of-pocket.

Working towards my FCC Amateur Radio Technician and General Class Licenses

In December 2021, I was planning to study for late December and early January to test for my FCC Amateur Radio Technician license.  Unfortunately, a week in the hospital due to cellulitis of left leg, septic shock (pseudomonas aeruginosa bacterial infection), high heart rate and low blood pressure, sinus-tachycardia derailed my plans for studying and testing for my FCC license.

After a busy couple of months between work, health, and personal events/hobbies, I’m finally able to dedicate my time and focus on studying/prepping for my FCC license.  I’m reading and practicing from the ARRL study prep guides and enrolled in HamRadioPrep for the video courses and practice exams.

I’d love to tell you and show you my efforts in HAM radio soon… I’m also hoping to show my new FCC Vanity Callsign once I pass the test!

Here’s what I’m working on and practicing with:

Studying the Week after Christmas

As much as I truly would like to play console games all week (between Christmas and New Year’s) and read novels on the Kindle, I really do need to set deadlines for myself to get my FCC Technician license, General license, and begin my CISSP.

I’m taking classes, studying, and doing practice exams to test my knowledge cold. I want to score 90% (or better) with each practice exam (cold) before scheduling my proctored exams.

HAM Radio Gear and Pending “Radio Shack”

While I’ve been into radio scanning using Uniden Bearcat, Tandy/Radio Shack, and Yaesu receivers and transceivers since I was a teenager, I’m now using a Yaesu VX-8DR as my handheld transceiver, a Malahit 1.10c SDR (Software Defined Radio) at 50MHz through 2.0GHz, and getting a new HackRF One with Portapack H2 at 50MHz through 6.0GHz.

I already have my Federal Registry Number (FRN) but haven’t yet scheduled my proctored exam for my FCC Technician or General licenses yet.  Right now, taking an FCC practice exam “cold” (no studying or prep) gets me 60-70%.  I want to consistently score 90% or better on any practice exam (taken “cold”) before I schedule my exam with a certified radio operator.  I’m hoping to take my FCC Technician exam by early/mid January, and to get my FCC Callsign by late January once I’m entered in the ULS.

I already have a few ideas for my FCC Vanity Callsign.  I’ll make it public once I’ve passed my exam and I have my ULS pending or complete.

First Time with ROLI LUMI Keys

So while I have a beautiful KORG KROME-88 Music Workstation with a fully-weighted 88-key keyboard that I got two years ago as part of my “bucket list” to learn and play…

…my ability to play is extremely limited.  I usually rely upon GarageBand or FL STUDIO to play and show off what the KORG can really do!

And so, I got a ROLI LUMI Keys Studio Edition to learn and teach myself how to be proficient on the keyboard.  I’m hoping to practice each night, eventually moving from cascading colors back to reading traditional sheet music as my posture and proficiency improve.

Many years ago, I was proficient in playing the viola, I could read sheet music well, and my favorite piece to play on the viola was Pachelbel Canon in D.  It’s been a few decades since I last picked up and played a viola, and I never learned how to play to keyboard despite my sincere desire to.  So, this is my continued foray into better my music ability and desire to become proficient on the keyboard. 😆✌

So this is my new 4.7Ghz 16-core AMD Ryzen 9 3950X with Nvidia RTX 3080 that is going to be my office workstation and gaming rig driving the Samsung CRG9 49″ curved 5K DQHD 120Hz HDR10 monitor, Samsung Odyssey+ 3K VR/HMD, and Dolby Atmos sound.

  • Processor: AMD Ryzen 9 3950X Sixteen Core Processor (64MB Cache, 3.5GHz-4.7GHz) 105W (Liquid Cooled)
  • RAM: 64GB DDR4 3200MHz
  • Hard Drive: 2TB NVMe Solid State Drive + 12TB 7200rpm Hard Disk Drive
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 10GB GDDR6X
  • Motherboard: X570 Chipset
  • Power Supply: 750W Platinum PSU
  • Operating System: Windows 10 Professional x64
  • Features: Dual Side Panel Doors, Addressable RGB Control via Remote
  • Accessories: Wired LED Backlit USB Gaming Keyboard and Mouse Included
  • 3-Year CUK Limited Warranty

I’m hoping to run all my VMs for hosting Ubuntu, Docker, SaltStack, and Ansible for my daytime/weekday development while playing games during the evenings and weekends.

As much as I like the RGB keyboard and mouse that comes from Computer Upgrade King (CUK), I like my Razer BlackWidow V3 Pro and Razer Gaming Mouse better.

Losing Myself, Finding Myself

Aslan and Edmund (C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia)

“…I looked up and saw the very last thing I expected: a huge lion coming slowly toward me. And one queer thing was that there was no moon last night, but there was moonlight where the lion was. So it came nearer and nearer. I was terribly afraid of it. You may think that being a dragon, I could have knocked any lion out easily enough. But it wasn’t that kind of fear. I wasn’t afraid of it eating me, I was just afraid of it—if you can understand. Well, it came close up to me and looked straight into my eyes. And I shut my eyes tight. But that wasn’t any good because it told me to follow it.”

“You mean it spoke?”

“I don’t know. Now that you mention it, I don’t think it did. But it told me all the same. And I knew I’d have to do what it told me, so I got up and followed it. And it led me a long way into the mountains… there was a garden—trees and fruit and everything. In the middle of it, there was a well… The water was as clear as anything and I thought if I could get in there and bathe it would ease the pain in my leg. But the lion told me I must undress first… So I started scratching myself and my scales began coming off all over the place… But just as I was going to put my feet into the water I looked down and saw that they were all hard and rough and wrinkled and scaly just as they had been before… Then the lion said—but I don’t know if it spoke—‘You will have to let me undress you.’ I was afraid of his claws, I can tell you, but I was pretty nearly desperate now. So I just lay flat down on my back to let him do it. The very first tear he made was so deep that I thought it had gone right into my heart. And when he began pulling the skin off, it hurt worse than anything I’ve ever felt. The only thing that made me able to bear it was just the pleasure of feeling the stuff peel off. You know—if you’ve ever picked the scab off a sore place. It hurts like billy-oh but it is such fun to see it coming away.”

“I know exactly what you mean,” said Edmund.

“Well, he peeled the beastly stuff right off—just as I thought I’d done it myself the other three times, only they hadn’t hurt—and there it was lying on the grass: only ever so much thicker, and darker, and more knobbly-looking than the others had been. And there was I as smooth and soft as a peeled switch and smaller than I had been. Then he caught hold of me—I didn’t like that much for I was very tender underneath now that I’d no skin on—and threw me into the water. It smarted like anything but only for a moment. After that, it became perfectly delicious and as soon as I started swimming and splashing I found that all the pain had gone from my arm. And then I saw why. I’d turned into a boy again.”

“Walkies” Together and Finding Solace

Walkies Together as Family

After a very difficult night and a rough morning, I am so very-very thankful just to enjoy a comforting walk together with Victoria, Kiyomi, and Toshirō.

I have so much on my plate right now, stuff does fall off regularly. You can’t honestly expect me to remember, do, or take everything when I’m combatting Lymphoma, Edema, Nasal Congestion, Sinus Drip, and Colitis. I’m either spewing a bloody mess out of one end, or coughing up phlegm from the other.

So the little things; like curling up together as family in the living room and watching movies together, or taking a leisurely walk together as family, these little things matter so much to me. They take my mind off my discomfort, situation, and pain. For a moment, I am removed from my situation and there is only the comfort and togetherness of family

John Roy You guys are truly amazing, Ken.

Ken Foreman I don’t know how I would have gotten this far without Victoria, Kiyomi, and Toshirō.

They have been my rock, my lighthouse, and my hope these past two years. It is not a cliche to say that I’ve spent 3 AM in a darkened ICU hospital room, thinking of family. It is not a cliche to say I’ve thought of our pups while thousands of miles away, desiring nothing more than to be home together with them.

Cancer (and it’s treatment) is a most terrible thing. I do not have the strength, temerity, Stoicism, or Sainthood to bear it alone. I am certain that it would have claimed me it sooner if not for the love and presence of family.

Everyone needs a support network. Whether it is family, friends, social media, or support groups, life is far more bearable if it’s not lived alone.

…and for THAT, I cannot be thankful enough.

Togetherness

Keeping Myself Busy While At Hopkins

Ink samurai jungshan

I’m keeping myself busy while at Hopkins with documenting Snippet: Check Certificates using Python and adding more scripts with documentation.

I’m uploading my earlier Python scripts to my Wiki for the purpose of sharing my style and expectations with others.

I’m also re-learning A Byte of Python to brush up on my waning Python 3 skills since I’ve been focusing on pipelines, monitoring, metrics, and automated deployments for this past year or two.

Preparing for the Long Road Ahead

Family Bible & Rosary of Victoria & Kenneth Foreman

In the coming month, I have multiple bone biopsies, full-body PET scans, numerous blood tests and CT scans, and the various tests (pulmonary, cardiology) in preparation for heavy chemotherapy and whole body radiation therapy.  While I am no stranger to chemotherapy, this will be a much higher dosage in combination with radiation as my oncology team tries to wipe out my cancer and immune system so I can receive a bone marrow transplant (BMT).

For the past year, I did several months of R-CHOP (also known as the Nordic Protocol) where I received heavy doses of chemotherapy via a mediport in my chest. Rituximab, Cyclophosphamide, Doxorubicin, Vincristine, Prednisolone, and Cytarabine were all prescribed to me over 6 cycles from February 2018 through June 2018.

After 6 cycles of R-CHOP, I was found to be in remission after verification using two full-body PET scans.  I opted for three years of Rituxan (Rituximab) therapy as my maintenance chemo rather than undergoing a bone marrow transplant (BMT) since I thought it would be easier and less traumatic for me and my family.  Little did I know that my remission wouldn’t even last three months, with my cancer returning before the end of the third month.

Family Bible & Rosary of Victoria & Kenneth Foreman

So I was started on 560mg/day of Imbruvica followed by 440mg/day of Venclexta as my second-line of daily chemotherapy since my cancer was no longer responding to Rituximab.  The Imbruvica had little effect on me, about as benign and well-tolerated as Rituximab.

Venclexta was far harder on my body, with many of the same side-effects as what I experienced with R-CHOP earlier.  By January 2019, I would need to have my blood drawn every 3-4 days in order to monitor my white blood cells (WBC), platelets, and Neutrophils.  Almost once a week, I would need to stop my daily Venclexta and start daily Zarxio (bone marrow stimulant) to allow my WBC, platelets, and neutrophils to recover for 2-3 days before resuming Venclexta again.

And now I’m preparing for the massive amounts of chemotherapy and radiation so that I can receive a bone marrow transplant via a Hickman catheter while I receive my chemo prior using my chest mediport.  I’ll be staying at Johns Hopkins Baltimore with my wife for 2-3 months during the procedure and recovery.

Everything you see here with my recent activities in reading, technology, toys, and more are all preparation for my time ahead.  These are all things I wanted to do to keep my mind off of the ordeal my wife and I are experiencing, and to stay mentally engaged while struggling to overcome this cancer.

Excited to get my first KORG Keyboard

KORG KROME-88 synthesizer keyboard and workstation

Saw that my KORG KROME-88 shipped from Atlanta, GA, last night and should arrive here tomorrow. I’ll be shipping my Yamaha PRS-E443 back as a trade-in.

Victoria is already teasing me about keeping a synthesizer keyboard at my office desk. She asked if I was going to be playing on it while waiting for servers to build or during my downtime while working in DevOps.

Yes. Yes I am. 😁

If you hear “Phantom of the Opera” or “Carmina Burana” playing from a majestic pipe organ in our office… that would be me. 😉😆
